Close to 400 people across the District can see more clearly thanks to an innovative model of ophthalmology care in Timmins.
Through locum coverage and a unique partnership between Timmins and District Hospital (TADH) and the University of Toronto’s Kensington Eye Institute, ophthalmology services continue to expand across the area, helping to reduce wait times for vision care and provide access to care closer to home.
I’m grateful for our team of clinicians and our partnership with the Kensington Eye Institute. Prior to the expansion of services, ophthalmology services across the district faced significant challenges resulting in many patients having to travel to access care. As Northerners, we’re known for being innovative, and this unique model of care is a great example of innovation.
Since the program launched in March of this year, close to 400 people have received care, including 90 referrals for cataract surgery with 40 surgeries completed to date. In addition, almost 300 patients are already booked appointments for in 2024.
“I’m grateful for our team of clinicians and our partnership with the Kensington Eye Institute,” shared Kate Fyfe, TADH President and CEO. “Prior to the expansion of services, ophthalmology services across the district faced significant challenges resulting in many patients having to travel to access care. As Northerners, we’re known for being innovative, and this unique model of care is a great example of innovation.”
“Timmins and District is greatly benefiting from the experience and academic resources that this model of care has to offer,” stated Dr. Alejandro Oliver, TADH Ophthalmologist. “Operating two weeks out of every month, this clinic has allowed greater access to more timely care closer to where people live.”
TADH continues to pursue opportunities to increase clinic operations and surgical services and is working to further expand services in 2024.
