Emergency Department

Supporting Over 45,000 Visits per Year

The Emergency Department (ED) at the Timmins and District Hospital (TADH) is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for patients. Our highly skilled team of emergency physicians, nurses and health professionals support approximately 45,000 visits each year. Our multidisciplinary team is trained to provide a wide range care options for all ages.

The ED is intended to provide emergency medical care for serious or urgent medical problems, who may be unable to be seen by their primary care provider.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our team works hard to provide safe, quality care as quickly as possible. Emergency Departments work on a triage system, making sure that the most seriously ill or injured patients are seen first, meaning those with less urgent needs may wait longer.

Your patience, kindness, and compassion with our team is very appreciated. If your condition worsens while you’re waiting to be seen, please let a member of the TADH team know immediately.

  • A valid copy of your health card.
  • A list of any medications that you are taking, or the bottles (including all prescription, non-prescription and herbal supplements).
  • A list of any allergies that you may have.
  • If you are bringing your child we recommend bringing diapers, a favourite toy or activity book.

Our Emergency Department waiting room doesn’t always paint a clear picture of the level of activity being experienced in the treatment area.  Emergency Departments work on a triage system, making sure that the most seriously ill or injured patients are seen first, meaning those with less urgent needs may wait longer.

While there may not be a large number of people accessing care through the Emergency Department, our team may be responding to a serious medical issue or injury that requires a larger staff response.

Additionally, there are many different types of rooms with specialized equipment needed for different medical concerns in the Emergency Department. Patients with less urgent care needs may need to wait for that room, or piece of equipment to be free prior to being seen.

Our team works incredibly hard to ensure you’re provided with the highest quality care, as quickly as possible. Your treatment may take longer than anticipated if:

  • You require tests like bloodwork or diagnostic imaging.
  • Your emergency physician requires immediate test results.
  • Your emergency physician needs to consult with a specialist regarding your care.
