Comprehensive Stroke Care

Timmins and District Hospital (TADH) is a proud partner of the Ontario Stroke System and the Northeastern Ontario Stroke Network. As a designated District Stroke Centre, TADH serves as the central hub for stroke care in the Cochrane District, including the James and Hudson Bay coasts. Our dedicated team of health care professionals provides comprehensive care, from prevention and acute treatment to rehabilitation and recovery support, ensuring patients receive the best possible outcomes at every stage of stroke care.

Stroke Prevention

If you suspect you or someone else may be having a stroke, it is critical to call 911 immediately. At TADH, patients are rapidly evaluated at our Emergency Department, where they are assessed for eligibility to receive the “clot-busting” drug Tenecteplase (TNK). This powerful, time-sensitive intervention can significantly reduce the severity of stroke and improve recovery if administered early, highlighting the importance of seeking immediate medical attention.

In addition to acute stroke treatment, our stroke care team works closely with patients and families to guide them through recovery, offering a range of rehabilitation services tailored to individual needs. We are committed to providing ongoing education, support, and preventive care to reduce the risk of future strokes. As part of our partnership with the Ontario Stroke System and Northeastern Ontario Stroke Network, we continue to improve stroke care delivery and ensure that patients in our region have access to the latest advancements in stroke treatment and recovery.

Integrated Stroke Unit

Inpatient stroke care at TADH is provided on the Integrated Stroke Unit, a specialized unit that combines both acute care and rehabilitation services in one setting. This integrated approach allows stroke patients to receive continuous, seamless care, starting from the initial acute phase through to early rehabilitation. The unit is designed to optimize recovery by providing comprehensive medical treatment alongside physical, occupational, and speech therapies, all tailored to the individual needs of each patient. By having both acute and rehabilitative services in the same unit, TADH ensures a more efficient and coordinated stroke recovery process, helping patients regain their independence as quickly as possible.
