Position Overview

The Personal Support Worker (PSW) works collaboratively with the interdisciplinary team in delivering quality patient- and family-centered care. The PSW assists with or provides personal care that an individual is unable to perform and may deliver basic elements of nursing care under the direction of the nursing coordinator or delegate. Working closely with the nursing care team, the PSW performs duties under the supervision of a nurse.

Position Responsibilities

  • Function within the PSW role as defined by the Ministry of Education and Training PSW Post-Secondary 1-Year Certificate, under supervision and by following care/service plans and established policies and procedures within an ethical, legal framework.
  • Participate as an effective member of the interdisciplinary care team in the Integrated Medical Program with patients across the lifespan.
  • Use basic knowledge, care/service plans, and established policies and procedures to support the patient’s personal care, mobility, and activities of daily living requirements.
  • Encourage and assist with patient participation in activity programs developed on the unit.
  • Communicate effectively and appropriately using oral, written, and nonverbal methods.
  • Assist in promoting and maintaining a safe and comfortable environment for patients.
  • Make, collect, and report relevant observations to the supervisor in a timely manner and record them as instructed by the nursing coordinator or delegate.

Position Requirements

  • Personal Support Worker 1-Year Certificate from an accredited College of Applied Arts and Technology.
  • Relevant hospital or healthcare institution experience.
  • CPR certification.
  • Employment history demonstrating regular attendance at work.
  • Proven ability to work with patients across the lifespan.
  • Patience, understanding, and tact when dealing with patients, staff, families, and visitors.
  • Good health and sufficient strength to perform work requiring the lifting of equipment, aiding of incapacitated patients, and frequent walking, standing, bending, and stooping.
  • Knowledge of safe transfer techniques.
  • Ability to perform effectively under stress during critical or unexpected events.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills and ability to work collaboratively as a team member.
  • Current resume required.
  • Must possess the ability to provide effective services to clients/patients in both English and French. Individuals who do not meet the language requirements of this posting are invited to submit their resume for future consideration.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Starting salary of $30.11/hour – $58,714.50/year (as per step 1 of the STW collective agreement).
  • Option to enroll in the Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan.
