June marked my first month as President and CEO of Timmins and District Hospital. I spent much of this time doing what I believe every new leader should do first: listening, learning and getting to know the people who make this hospital work.

I’ve had the opportunity to meet with members of the team across the organization, spend time in different areas of the hospital, and hear firsthand about the work underway, the pressures people are facing and the opportunities ahead.

What has stood out most is the unwavering commitment across the hospital to patients, families and one another, even in the most challenging moments.

Hospitals are complex organizations. Every program, department and service has its own realities, and each plays an important role in the overall experience of care. The work that happens at the bedside is supported by many others behind the scenes, and every role matters.

In my first month, I have seen that people here take pride in their work. I have also heard honest reflections about where things are going well and where we need to keep improving. That honesty is how strong organizations grow.

Throughout my career in Northern Ontario, I have seen how deeply hospitals are connected to the strength and wellbeing of the communities they serve. Decisions made inside a hospital have a direct impact on patients, families and the broader region. That is especially true at Timmins and District Hospital, given our role as a regional hospital serving 110,000 people in an area the size of Atlantic Canada.

Our hospital is entering an important new chapter. The Emergency Department redevelopment is a major investment in the future of care for this region. We are also preparing to move forward with a new strategic plan that will help define our priorities, sharpen our focus, and guide the work ahead.

These are significant opportunities. They also come at a time when health care continues to face real pressures, including increasing demand, workforce challenges, aging infrastructure, related financial requirements, and the need to provide care across a large geography.

Meeting those challenges will require clarity, discipline and partnership. It will require us to build on what is working, address what needs to improve, and stay focused on the needs of the people and communities we serve.

My role is to help bring that work together with a clear sense of purpose. That starts with listening, but it certainly doesn’t end there. It means setting clear priorities, making thoughtful, informed decisions, and supporting our teams so they have what they need to do their best work. It also means staying grounded in the realities of our health-care system, understanding the pressures people face day to day, and working to move things forward in a meaningful way.

After my first month, I am confident in the foundation we have to build on. Our hospital has skilled and dedicated people, strong partnerships, deep community support, and a clear purpose that guides the work. These are the roots that allow an organization to navigate change and continue to grow.

I am grateful for the warm welcome I have received and for the openness people have shown me. I look forward to continuing to build together as we shape the next chapter of Timmins and District Hospital.
