Program Overview:
Addiction Medicine Consult Service
The Addiction Medicine Consult Service (AMCS) is a multi-disciplinary team supported by physicians, registered nurses and social workers. The goal of the AMCS is to provide patient-centered and trauma-informed case while practicing a harm reduction approach to any patient who may be referred to AMCS for a substance and/or opioid use disorders. This team can support treatment options in hospital or refer to community-based addiction services depending on the patient’s wishes.
Community Withdrawal Management Service
Through the In-Home Mobile Withdrawal Management Service, the Community Withdrawal Management Service (WMS) brings services and supports to the individual. This program connects with patients in an individual’s home, the home of a family member, shelter or other place a person is residing. This outreach service provides safe, supportive treatment for individuals who are experiencing acute withdrawal from substances, allowing them to withdraw from substances at home in the Cochrane District.
Inpatient Acute Withdrawal Management Beds
In response to community need, the Timmins and District Hospital opened two Inpatient Acute Withdrawal Management Beds, creating additional withdrawal management capacity for the Cochrane District.
These beds provide an alternative to residential withdrawal, providing a location where people can safely withdraw, with medical support, from substances. This program provides a safe and supportive environment where people receive supportive care, counseling, medication monitoring and transition planning.
Safe Health Site Timmins
Safe Health Site Timmins (SHST) is an Urgent Public Health Needs Site – also known as supervised-consumption site or overdose-prevention site. SHST is a controlled space where people can consume their own pre-obtained drugs under supervision of trained staff who can respond if a medical emergency (overdose) occurs. People who use the service can access basic medical care, referrals to treatment services, withdrawal beds, and other health and social services.
SHST is a collaboration of the Timmins and Area Drug Strategy Steering Committee. The committee represents more than 20 community partners from local agencies, including health and social services, as well as public and emergency response services. SHST is just one initiative of the larger, comprehensive community drug strategy. As the operator, TADH is responsible for the day-to-day operations. Supervised Consumption Services
Our community is moving forward with the application process for a Supervised Consumption Services site (SCS). This provincially-funded site would replace the existing temporary Urgent Public Health Needs Site (SHST), once approval is received.
